At least 13 people have been reported died and scores were injured after a white van ploughed into a crowd in Barcelona’s busy tourist area, officials said.
Catalonia’s Interior Minister, Joaquim Forn, confirmed the death toll on Twitter. At least 80 people have been hospitalised, Catalonia’s regional head, Carles Puigdemont, said so at news conference. Police said at least 10 of the injured sustained serious wounds, describing Thursday’s incident as a “terrorist attack.”
The Spanish police had so far arrested two persons, as they dismissed earlier reports of suspects holed up in a nearby bar. The suspected driver of the van mounted a pavement at around 5pm local time (15:00 GMT) in the city’s iconic Las Ramblas area, which is full of shops and restaurants. It was said that the driver of the vehicle had fled on foot after the attack. Authorities are still not clear how many attackers had been involved in the incident.
